Frequently Asked Questions

What is neonatology?
Neonatology is a subspecialty of pediatrics which focuses primarily on the medical needs of newborn babies, or neonates.

What is a NICU?
A Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is a hospital unit which is dedicated to the care of sick infants. Most commonly, an infant is sent to the NICU because he or she is premature, and prone to an assortment of health problems. Critically ill infants may also spend time in the NICU until they are stabilized, at which point they can be moved into more general nurseries or sent home.

Why am I receiving a bill/statement from Fairfax Neonatal Associates? My child was not admitted to the NICU.
In addition to neonatologists and neonatal nurse practitioners, Fairfax Neonatal Associates also provides hospital pediatric services. These services may be related to care provided in the delivery room, newborn services in the nursery or pediatric services through the ER and pediatric floor.

Why did I receive a bill from you? I thought you were part of the hospital system.
Fairfax Neonatal Associates is a private practice that provides services at the hospital, however, are not employees of the hospital system.

Why do I need to enroll my baby? My baby should be covered automatically.
Many insurance plans vary the coverage terms for newborn care. To ensure that services provided for your baby are covered by your insurance, the baby needs to be enrolled or added to the insurance plan.

Do you need to know all of the insurance policies the baby will have for coverage?
Yes, in order to ensure accuracy of insurance reimbursement any insurance that the baby is enrolled on the date of service requires notification. When you have multiple plans, there are plan benefit rules which determine primary and secondary carriers.

What is coordination of benefits?
Coordination of benefits (COB) is required when you have multiple insurance plans. Coordination of benefits is the determination of which insurance pays: primary, secondary, or tertiary.
