Fairfax Neonatal Associates (FNA) started the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the Inova Fairfax Hospital over thirty-five (35) years ago. Since that time, we have continued to provide physician and Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP) staffing to the NICU at the Inova Fairfax Hospital (now known as the Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children), one of the busiest NICUs in the country.
FNA also provides neonatologists for the NICUs at Inova Fair Oaks Hospital, Inova Loudoun Hospital and Sentara Potomac Hospital. In our four locations we are responsible for the critical care needs of nearly 20,000 newborns each year.
At the Inova Fair Oaks Hospital, Fairfax Neonatal Associates also maintains a 24-hour on site pediatric hospitalist service.
Our success with even the smallest infants is well recognized throughout the community and has gained national recognition. We are proud that the neonatal mortality rate for infants born at Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children is one of the lowest in the nation.
We are constantly working to maintain the highest standard of care. Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children is an active participant in the Vermont-Oxford Quality Improvement Network. The NICU has taken the lead in reducing the incidence of Chronic Lung Disease.
In the NICU at the Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children we have recently initiated a Therapeutic Hypothermia (body cooling) program to reduce brain damage for certain high-risk infants.
Our neonatologists are actively involved in several areas of neonatal outcomes research.
